Roulette Wheels

Roulette wheels are made up from two separate parts. The outer section of the wheel is called the bowl and this is where the ball spin round before dropping towards the inner section called the wheelhead. This section spins round with all the numbered ball pockets where the ball eventually lands. Each numbered ball pocket in the wheelhead is coloured red or black apart from the “0” and “00” which are green. There are three main types of wheels used today which are the French wheel the US wheel and the UK wheel. The differences are described below.

French Wheel

The French wheel is found in France and at most casinos in Europe except in the UK. It has 37 numbered ball pockets numbered from 0-36. The numbers are situated round the wheel in a seemingly random layout and the betting layout uses the original French terms. This wheel has an advantage to the casino of 2.7% and if the “en prison” rule is played the advantage can be cut to 1.35%. When betting a player uses normal casino chips indistinguishable from other players chips. Here is an example of the french wheel.

US Wheel

The US wheel is found in most casinos in the US although several casinos are adopting the UK version of the wheel. It has 38 numbered ball pockets numbered from 0-36 with an additional “00” ball pocket. The numbers are situated around the wheel can be in different positions depending on the particular wheel. The betting layout is in English and each player is given different coloured chips to bet with to avoid any confusion about who’s chip are who’s. This type of wheel has an advantage to the casino of 5.3% and if the “surrender” rule is in effect then the house advantage can be cut to 2.6%.

UK Wheel

The UK wheel is found in all casinos in the UK. It has 37 numbered ball pockets numbered from 0-36. The numbers are situated round the wheel in the same way as the French wheel but the betting layout uses English terms. This wheel has an advantage to the casino of 2.7% and if the “le partage” rule is played the advantage can be cut to 1.35%. When betting a player uses normal casino chips indistinguishable from other players chips.
