Class is a difficult attribute to define. You will hear people at the race course describing class horses but often they won't themselves really know what they really mean. It is a bit of an ambiguous tag to put on a horse.
The first sign of class comes first from a horses pedigree. Horses that are said to be class will usually have been bred from illustrious parents and the class which the parents had, will be passed down the generations. Unfortunately, in a huge number of horses this simply is not true as many other factors come into play and if this was the only factor, then producing champion race horses would be a simple task.
Another factor that is often used to determine a class horse is in it's innate competitiveness. At a young age classier horses will want to train harder, will learn faster and improve quicker than less classy horses. These horses will start their careers with wins at an early age and will move up in the quality of races they run much faster than the average horse.
From this you can see that defining a class horse relates to a number of different factors. A class horse is in reality just a horse which has talent and there is no set of rules that determines whether a horse has class or not. So as a tool to help you picking winners it is really of little use. You are better basing your judgement on qualities that are much easier to define such as form and speed.
