Another way of succeeding at card counting is by playing in a team which can further increase your chances of beating the casino.
Although card counting had been around for many years, in the 1990's a group of Maths students who all studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology devised a method of playing blackjack as a team.
By this time casinos had got quite good at spotting players who were card counting due to the irregular way in which they bet. The Maths students realised that by playing as a team it would be much more difficult to be detected by the casino staff. They used this method of play for a couple of years and in that time managed to win several million dollars before the casinos finally worked out what they were doing.
To play as a team is quite simple all you need is two or more players who know basic strategy and are capable of competently card counting and one other player with a large amount of betting funds. The two or more card counters sit at different tables and play blackjack at a table and only bet the minimum amount on each hand. They play the game just using basic strategy so will only lose about 0.5% of a relatively small amount. The player with the large amount of funds stands around in the casino waiting for a pre-determined signal from one of the card counters. When a situation has risen at one of the tables, where the count is in the players favour the card counter will signal to the player with the large amount of money to join the game. This player then bets large sums of money on each hand until the card counter signals to the player again that the count is no longer in his favour. He then leaves the table and waits for the next card counter to signal that their table has got a positive count. As you can see, to the casino staff it would just look like a high-roller was wondering around the tables and getting lucky and the card counters do not look suspicious because they bet the minimum bet at all times.
