Doubling Down

In the game of blackjack there is another rule which allows you to increase your original bet during a hand and this is called doubling down. If you think you have a good chance of winning you are able to "double down" which enables you to double the value of your original bet. In some casinos you are able to choose how much extra you bet up to a maximum of the original bet. Some casinos also let you double down on split pairs and some don't.

To indicate to the dealer that you want to double down all you need to do is place the additional bet next to your original bet (not on top) and they will automatically know that you are doubling down. After having decided to double down you will receive one more card from the dealer then you must "stand". The dealer will usually deal the card face down and only when all other bets have been settled will the dealer turn the card face-up and settle your bet.

When the dealer has finished his own hand and you have won you will receive the same amount from the dealer as you have bet in total. If you lose he will take both the bets and if it is a "push" he will leave both bets where they are.

The double down rule is the way in which you are able to shave the odds in favour of the casino. Learning when to double down is crucial to success at the blackjack tables and must be learnt perfectly. When doubling down you always double your bet even if you have the option of only increasing it a bit. If the odds are in your favour then the more you bet the better it is for you
